Urban Icons

This project began after a visit to the museum under the parvis of Nôtre-Dame in Paris, where I saw
a model of the earliest settlement in Paris. There it was: a church
in  an island in the center of a
river in the center of a settle–
ment surrounded by a circular wall. Wouldn’t it be fun to see
the salient aspects of great cities organized inside a circle: how
God would have designed cities if he had been paying attention.

These sketches, and the Plate Tectonics project, are based on Rome. Paris, it turned out, is the most difficult city to map.
